4 day fest back the West: Music, comedy, club culture, and a fine vintage

One Upon a Time Back The West is a four-day celebration of tunes, gigs, and comedy that will be setting up shop in the Dominic St. area this coming Thursday, February 8. Sometimes called ‘The West End’, and affectionately known as ‘where the Róisín is’, this area (and also Leisureland) will host a variety of musical and comedic talent over the four days. Plan your route/crawl between venues, and take your pick from the guide below.

Thursday 8 February

LE BOOM – Róisín Dubh (Free)

Electric-indie-house-pop-duo LE BOOM began making music in 2016, and have since travelled the world with their upbeat jump-around style.

Coisa D’Preto – Massimo (Free)

Massimo Live presents the Brasilian band Coisa D’Preto, for a night of live samba music and dance, hosted by Galway Reggaeton Club.

Friday 9 February

Strange Brew showcase w/ Daithí, Slow Place Like Home, Elaine Mai, Paddy Hanna – Róisín Dubh (free)

A good mix of styles here. Daithí is a music producer from Galway, who brings some eclectic indie-rock-electronic- violin fusion to his performances. Elaine Mai has made herself known as a notable experimental electronic and vocal music producer and festival performer. With a new single recently released, Slow Place Like Home will be bringing some electro-vibes from the wild north-west. Paddy Hanna is Dublin based rock belter with an Irish tour on either side of this gig, and a new album on Strange Brew Records.

Glenn Wool & Karl Spain – Róisín Dubh (upstairs)

The first bit of comedy of the four days. Glenn Wool is from Canada who has won several awards of the last few years for his stand-out stand-up. Karl Spain is from Limerick and has been bringing laughter to Irish screens for several years.

Rowdy Brothers – Massimo (free)

Playing ‘the besht of music’ is the Rowdy Brothers, brothers from Birmingham bringing tunes and retro classics to the dance floor.

Mix & Fairbanks – The Blue Note (free)

An Irish duo who are wide to the disco and funk buzz, Mix & Fairbanks are to play the seasoned walls of the Blue Note.

Saturday 10 February

Franz Ferdinand – Leisureland

Down by the coast in Leisureland, Scottish band and indie chart toppers Franz Ferdinand are playing the Galway leg of their tour this weekend, and also have a new album out in a few days time.

Andy Zaltzman – Róisín Dubh

British author and comedian Andy Zaltzman brings comedy to the Róisín, with his own style of political and sport satire.

110th Street – The Blue Note (free)

A celebration of tunes and club nights, 110th street is brought to you two big time music lovers and DJs; Cyril Briscoe and Cian Ó Cíobháin.

DJ Mac – Massimo (free)

Closing the night off with live music and tunes from DJ Mac.

Sunday 11 February

Sing Along Social – Róisín Dubh (free)

If you enjoy a good sing alon then this is definitely something you’ll enjoy, with the Sing Along Social Choir.

John Conneely Inc. – Róisín Dubh

Sundays are for John Conneely Inc. and jazz at the Róisín. This group has smooth jamming and blues at their fingertips.

The Blue Notes – The Blue Note (free)

The Blue Notes Choir will be singing out in this venue, presented by local singer-songwriter Tracy Bruen.

Jade & The Goodies – Massimo (free)

Jade & The Goodies are a music group that will be bringing some guitar and song to Massimo on the last night of the fest.
